Alumni Vanitha and Kumara Sekar established the Saraswathi Scholarship for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2020. The fund was named in honor of Saraswathi, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, art, wisdom and learning.

“Kumar (Ph.D./H&S’93)  and I are passionate about championing diversity and inclusion in the workplace and mentoring women and immigrants in STEM related professional areas,” said Vanitha Sekar (M.S./P’92, Ph.D./P’95). “We therefore wanted to create the Saraswathi Scholarship for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Sciences to recognize and reward international students who have shown a commitment to advancing women in science. We hope that scholarships such as this one will help students who may be disadvantaged or excluded from higher education or graduate studies. Our inspiration stems from both of our parents, who believed in, encouraged and financially supported underprivileged young women in India become literate — young women who otherwise may have not had the opportunity.”
