Carolyn Coleman Stone was born in Roanoke, Virginia September 16, 1942. She was the daughter of William Tredway and Phyllis Artlip Coleman. She entered the Medical College of Virginia in 1961 after a year of pre-pharmacy at Roanoke College and graduated with her pharmacy degree in 1965.

Upon graduation, Carolyn worked in the MCV Health System Pharmacy until June of 1968 when she married H. Kenneth Stone, another 1965 pharmacy graduate. Mrs. Stone then moved to Norfolk and worked in a privately owned drug store until 1969 when she took a position in the DePaul Hospital Pharmacy in Norfolk. She became known for her ability to help all on the staff feel at home. “She was great in helping new people put down roots here,” said the DePaul assistant director of pharmacy. “She would find out all about them, all the little details. She had a special nickname for most of the people here. She was also the person who kept us organized; and she liked to make sure procedures were followed. Carolyn was great at following through on ideas and policy in detail.” She loved her work and was highly respected as a professional and friend by all of her co-workers at DePaul in and outside the pharmacy.

Carolyn Coleman Stone died in the MCV Hospital on December 15, 1987 at the age of 45. She was a member of the Virginia Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Carolyn’s parents and brother established the Carolyn Coleman (Stone) scholarship fund to honor of her memory.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a pharmacy student who has demonstrated financial need and academic achievement.
