Harry and Margaret Shaia P’58 established this scholarship, through the Harry and Zackia Shaia Foundation, to support pharmacy students who express a desire to address social concerns through the practice of pharmacy.   The award is given to a student in their P2 year and each subsequent year that student is in pharmacy school.

Harry Shaia grew up working in his family’s restaurant, the Skull and Bones, located where the Gateway building now sits. He met Margaret Gibrall while she was working at the MCV Health System Pharmacy.   Margaret passed away in 2009.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a first or second year pharmacy student based principally on financial need with strong consideration for academic performance and an established record of community service. The recipient will receive the same scholarship each year thereafter until graduation, assuming their need and merit remain unchanged.
