William S. Cooper Scholarship

William S. “Bill” Cooper (B.S./Pharm ‘57) was the first African American graduate of the MCV School of Pharmacy. The William S. Cooper Scholarship launched in 1987 with gifts made by the members of the Class of 1957 on the occasion of their 30th reunion.

“We were very surprised to learn of the scholarship,” wrote Cooper’s widow, LaVerne. “Bill had concentrated on his classes and helping support his family while at MCV. It took a while for some of his classmates to ‘accept’ him, but Bill was quick to address their questions and curiosities. ... There was something special about him and something special about them so his classmates named a scholarship in his name and endowed it at their 30th class reunion.

"So many lives have been touched since that time — recipients, parents, communities, Bill’s family and friends. We will be forever grateful to The MCV School of Pharmacy Class of 1957.”
