The Werner Lowenthal Symposium

Dr. Werner Lowenthal was a beloved Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics and the Director of Continuing Education at the VCU School of Pharmacy.

He joined the School’s faculty in 1961 and gave thirty-one years of his heart and soul to pharmacy education before he retired in 1992. Werner was a man who loved his family, respected his students’ right to a good education and had a special passion for scholarship. He was always proud of the school and the research he and others did. Orphan drugs were one of his “crusading issues” and so it is ironic that he died of a disease about which there is little known and for which there is no cure: Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. In establishing the Lowenthal Fund, Dr. Lowenthal’s widow, Dr. Hilda Meth’s hope was “that the research funded by this endowment will look at a number of these types of disorders” so that experimental treatment becomes an option for individuals diagnosed with rare fatal diseases.  Dr. Lowenthal is remembered fondly by his students for his Pharmaceutics Ethics course, rock paperweights and most importantly his undying passion for scholarship and the discovery of new knowledge.

Through this fund, Dr. Lowenthal’s passion will live on.
